Goldwire should be SoCon player of week

It’s hard to believe, but senior all-conference linebacker Seth Goldwire has never been named Southern Conference player of the week.
   That should change today.
Goldwire is sure to win defensive honors for the game he had Saturday night in the overtime victory at Georgia Southern. He had 11 tackles, 1.5 sacks, a fumble recovery and two interceptions, including a 35-yard return for the first touchdown of his career.
   That’s a decent night’s work.
What’s even more special about it is that Goldwire is from Guyton, Ga., only about 30 miles from Statesboro, and scraped up enough tickets from teammates to bring more than a dozen family members to the game. Some of them never get to see him play.
It couldn’t have happened at a better time to a better person. Goldwire really is gold. The writers from the Savannah newspaper asked me about him and told me how much they liked him from his high school days at Effingham County.
On campus, he’s soft-spoken and polite and wears glasses and if you didn’t know him, you’d never guess he was a bear on a football field.
   Player of the week, too.

UPDATE: He got it. Of course.
