Terriers dogged again in FCS pairings

Wofford is a victim of the sagging economy.
   That’s all I can figure.
The Terriers were dogged again by the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision selection committee, which paired them up in the first round with James Madison, the No. 1 team in the country. Getting dogged has become almost an annual event for the Terriers. They were left out in 2002 with a 9-3 record and a loss to Maryland. They were shipped off to No. 2 Montana last year after winning the Southern Conference.
At 9-2 this year with losses to South Carolina and Appalachian State, you’d think Wofford would get a better matchup or even a home game. Like everybody else, I just shook my head in disbelief.
But this time, I really want to believe, it was not because the selection committee disrespected Wofford. This time, I really want to believe, it was due to regionalization.
The problem is not that the Terriers were seeded last out of 16 teams. The problem is that they weren’t seeded. The committee seeds only four teams and everybody else is basically thrown into a hat. From there, teams are paired up regionally as much as possible (for fans’ convenience and to make money while saving on the NCAA's travel expenses). This year, the committee stretched the radius from 300 miles to 400 miles.
That was enough to pair Spartanburg with Harrisonburg, Va.
Bids from the schools and attendance records are also considered by the committee. My understanding is that Wofford poured most of its bid money into a possible second round like last year when the Terriers played host to Richmond. Gibbs Stadium attendance figures aren’t going to blow anybody away, either – especially considering there is a game Saturday between South Carolina and Clemson.
South Carolina State would have been a good fit, but the Bulldogs were the obvious connection for No. 2 seed Appalachian State, falling inside the mileage meter. Wofford and ASU couldn’t be paired up because they are from the same conference. There are five teams from Colonial Athletic Association, so that took away some potential partners with JMU.
The thing that really sealed Wofford’s unfortunate fate was the 26-3 loss by Elon in its final game against Liberty. If the Phoenix had won that game, they would have made the playoffs and been sent to James Madison. Liberty, meanwhile, from the Big South, was left out despite a 10-2 record (two Division II wins) or that would have been JMU’s opponent. Maine, at 8-4, apparently took the final position.
So instead of facing the top overall seed, the Terriers might have taken Maine’s place and traveled by trains, planes and automobiles on Thanksgiving to third overall seed Northern Iowa.
   Is that much better?
If the Terriers’ goal was to win a playoff game, they would be more upset. But their goal is to win the whole thing, so it really doesn’t appear to matter to them.
And, sure, the FCS playoff system is far from perfect.
At least it’s not the bowl system.

I looked at the playoff selection differently until I read your blog. Once again you have proven to be a great asset in telling it like it is, not like we may want it to be. Thanks Todd for all the great articles and blogs throughout this past year. Let's hope and pray that we have at least five more weeks of articles and blogs from you about the Wofford Terrier Football Team and something special ending before Christmas in Chattanooga that has never been accomplished at Wofford. God Bless All, Have a Happy and Wonderful Thanksgiving and if you can, please go support Our Terriers when they play James Madison in Virginia Saturday at 3PM Eastern time, 11 PM Saudi Arabia Time where I will be listening and pulling for Our Terriers!!! GO TERRIERS!!!

I agree, Mr. Leventis. Todd is the best at what he does and is greatly appreciated by all of us who follow Wofford athletics from a distance.

Also and, importantly, we appreciate Andrew and Marie sending Jason our way. He is a model student-athlete, a great example of what we strive for at Wofford. We sure wish you could be here to see him play. He is fierce yet an extremely smart player and leader! Congratulations on raising an outstanding young man.

The table is now set. Go get them, Terriers, this Saturday at JMU. The National Championship is the goal. We BELIEVE in YOU.

Great to hear Wofford bid heavy on 2nd game as that will be key in getting to Chatanooga. If we can travel to Montana and knock off a #2 seed, might as well take on the #1 seed and get that out of the way. Perhaps JMU is looking at the commitee and wondering what they did to deserve such a tough bracket. Check out AnyGivenSaturday threads and see how nervous the JMU fans are. From what Wofford has done last 3 games it seems they are peaking just at the right time.Keep those awesome LIVE updates coming as I can't make the trip this week, but I am sure the Leventis clan will be there to root them on. Roll on Terriers, roll on.

Todd is right on with his analysis. Just looking at the matchup - Wofford has been explosive on offense, not only this year, but for the last few years - Wofford was a couple of plays from beating Delaware in '03 - the team struggles with athletic teams (App. State) I don't think James Madison has as many athletes as App. - therefore this will be a very close game - the difference will be James Madison's quarterback being able to run. I think going to Montana and winning will give the "short-haired" dog as Coach Ayers always says the confidence to get it done. Wofford by 4...what do you think..

In essence Wofford has the better team, but not the best athletes...if the opposing team does not have a whole lot of athletes the better team usually wins....

Todd, good blog. Polls now mean nothing. Now its time to continue our 3-0 win streak to 4-0! I listened to Coach Ayers on the weekly SoCon coaches teleconference today. How can you not get fired up to run through a brick wall for the Coach. The team looks to be peaking at the right time....GO TERRIERS!!!

Ga Dog - how do you listen to the SoCon teleconference? I would have loved to have listend to Coach Ayers. Having played for him his last year as an assistant before he and Sasser shipped off to ETSU, I know how motivating he can be as a coach. I only wish I had been able to play for him now.
Go Terriers!! BEAT JMU!
Also, anyone got some tips on where to listen to the game Saturday?

Hi 'Ol Timer [Visitor], I received an email that directed me to the James Madison Website which I think is http://www.jmusports.com and found when You click onto the "MadiZONE", the Internet broadband channel of JMU Athletics, there is a free internet video broadcast that you can register for 30 minutes before the 3PM game Saturday. You can also get the Live Game Updates, which I also do when listening or watching the game on interne broadcast, from The Best Reporter/Blogger Todd Shanesy right at this site. You can also listen to The Wofford Terriers by internet Radio on Wofford 1400 ESPN by going to the Wofford website and going to the athletics site then click on the Logo that is usually top left that has the Wofford Terrier Logo with 1400 ESPN logo. That will get you our Terrier Commentators calling the game as well. I am working overseas and I have learned to keep up with Our Terriers through Todd Shanesy and these other media vehicles as well.
To All, Have a Wonderful and Happy Thanksgiving Holiday and Safe Travels wherever You and Yours are Headed.
Go Terriers!
