Before we get back at it today in the American Legion state finals at Duncan Park with elimination games for Spartanburg (10 a.m.) and Gaffney (1:30 p.m.), some highlights from Thursday:

GAME OF THE DAY – West Columbia 10, Sumter 9
In a classic battle that literally took all day, West Columbia went up 9-4 with six runs in a sixth inning spread out over nearly four hours (weather delay), lost the lead immediately in the seventh and then won it in the eighth to knock out the defending champs. It only took seven hours.

MOMENT OF THE DAY – Zach Sharpe, West Columbia
His two-run single made sure Post 79 had the lead and the momentum when the game was stopped.

PITCHER OF THE DAY – Chad Balderman, Irmo-Chapin
Limestone coach Chico Lombardo sure was in a good mood in the stands as his signee allowed one hit in a seven-inning complete game to beat Conway, 12-2.

HITTER OF THE DAY – Michael Wilson, Florence
His bases-loaded triple in the bottom of the seventh inning was the final blow of a 14-4 win against Gaffney by mercy rule. He drove in four runs and reached base four times.

QUOTE OF THE DAY: "We're fixin' to get smacked in about 30 minutes." -- Grounds crew member and amateur meteorologist 28 minutes before the predicted downpour.
