Possible local 1,000-yard rushers

Boiling Springs tailback Josh Murph hit the 1,000-yard rushing plateau last week against Fort Mill, gaining those yards in only six games.

     Congratulations to Josh.

The next question is, how many more will there be?
Here are the area leaders in rushing.
     Josh Murph, BSP          134-1,125
     Dominique Parks, GRE  131-952
     Marcus Lattimore, BYR  109-889
     Efferlan Williams, GRE   88-773
     Ash Butler, DOR            82-771
     Cedric Proctor, CHE        71-613
     Lamont Edney, UNC     103-573
     Conelius Jones, SPA    134-470
     Maurice Gilliam, WOD    80-455
     Tyler Burrell, LAN           81-398

Looking over this list, there are a few things that caught my eye.
Notice that three of the top 10 rushers in the area are quarterbacks (Williams, Proctor and Jones).
     That’s pretty cool.
Having the threat of a running quarterback is big for teams, as it makes defenses worry about the multiple rushers in the backfield.

Two Greer runners will likely get over the 1,000-yard mark.
Efferlan Williams and Dominique Parks are both stellar rushers.
I wonder when the last time a local team had two guys hit that mark was?

Marcus Lattimore just keeps moving that career rushing record higher and higher.

Anyway, how many of these guys do you think will hit the 1,000-yard mark?
     I’m betting six or more.

Don't know about that, but I do remember that Byrnes had three in '76

Two Running Backs and a Quarterback all over 1,000 yards.

If we go far enough, I would think Maurice Gilliam would get there. We don't run as much out of the spread, but if we were more of a running team, he would make it and then some. The kid is flat out good. We ran more often than not against Southside, so maybe we will incorperate that into the game plan some more, and his number will shoot up. Great work Jason.

Greer had two guys in 1989. McGee and Sexton. They were unstoppable. The first 15-0 team in SC High School History.

Greer also had two in back to back seasons in 1994 & 95 in Lamont Williams and Lajerick Cannon to go along with McGee and Sexton in '89. That may be the big question. Not only has anyone had two, but has anyone else ever done it in back to back seasons? I'm not sure if Furman bound QB Justin Hill had 1000 or not in 1995, but if not he was close.

Boiling Springs Murph is no surprise.

With a size of his O-Line and wins over sub-par 4-A teams, and 2-A, 3-A teams, it was ineveitable that he reach 1,000. Regardless of who BS plays, it's says alot about Upstate football when all of the top rushers are here.

Congrats to Josh, hopefully he can keep that total up in Region play.

North Augusta high school's Tidy Johnson also surpassed over 1,000 yards rushing so far this year, hopefully the offensive line can keep it up and Tidy will get closed to 2,000 yards for the season, but it's not going to be easy for we start the toughness of our schedule.

About this blog

High school sports are my favorite to watch. Sure, I enjoy the Carolina Panthers and college basketball and football, but nothing compares to high school athletics. From cross country and swimming to football and basketball, the sport doesn't matter. They're all interesting and all fun to watch. This blog is dedicated to prep sports but that isn't all. While I'm a sports writer for the Herald-Journal, I'm also a music freak who loves XM Radio and my iPod. So while I'll mostly blog about sports, I'm going to throw some music in there also. This blog, though, isn't just about me. I want feedback and lots of it. I want you to ask questions and, when there's something to write about, I'll do a mailbag edition where I answer those questions. Thanks, and I look forward to blogging.
