Jason takes Concord, N.C.
Categories: Retailer corner, Random thoughts, Comics
Ken Kirzinger, who played Jason Vorhees in "Jason vs. Freddy" and was the stunt co-ordinator in "Friday the 13th, Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan," will be one of the featured guests at a self-billed supernatural, sci-fi and superhero show this weekend in Concord, N.C.
The event is this Saturday and Sunday at the Carbarrus Arena & Event Center. Plenty to do there, including a costume contest, bands, sci-fi and horror stars, a handful of (mostly) local comic artists, and even free zombie makeovers on Sunday. I'm tempted to go, just to meet Kirzinger.

Thanks to Dave's Comics in Rock Hill for the heads up.
This week in comics

Looks like "Supergirl" could come out of nowhere and be the sleeper hit of the month. I'll check it out despite some reservations about the creative team. But the new team is charged with integrating Supergirl more into the Superman mythos, which will hit in full force later this year with the "New Krypton" special when "Supergirl," "Superman" and "Action Comics" return to the long-lost cover triangles and basically become one thrice-monthly book.
That said, I hope to have read the issue by the time "New Krypton" hits. I'm so behind in my reading that I practically avoid the comic message boards these days so as not to have anything accidently spoiled, and I keep each week's purchases in the bag they came in until I can get a little caught up.
Moving. Ugh.

A couple of things to point out:
- This store is so confident that people will enjoy "Fables" and "Jack of Fables" that they're offering to sell the first trade paperback of each series to you -- and if you don't like it, they'll give you your money back! Now, both of these are great titles, albeit with "for mature readers" stamped on front, so keep your 4-year-olds away from these modern day fairy tales. One of the best things about them is that you can go in without ever having read a comic in your life and enjoy them. "Fables" is the main title, which focuses on fairy tale characters the world over trying to make it in today's mundane times. "Jack of Fables" is a spinoff, and possibly the single greatest contribution to American folklore of this decade. Anyone who grew up reading or listening to Jack tales -- and, yes, they involve more than just a beanstalk -- will appreciate the ongoing adventures of this staple from our history.
- DC Comics is finally releasing "All-Star Batman & Robin, the Boy Wonder" No. 10 this week. For those who haven't been following the controversy, the publisher asked that retailers scrap the original printing recently after realizing some words are even too strong for comics -- and that they weren't blacked out. If you're interested, Lying in the Gutters has scans of uncensored pages. Be warned: Don't read this if you are easily offended. (Of course, I'm offended that anything was blacked out to begin with, but what do I know?)
